Remand of accused in murder case extended

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Feb 14: Barring Mahesh Desai and his alleged mistress Usha Maliwad, the prime accused in the sensational Sajid Valodiya-Indira Parmar murder case, the remand periods of all the seven people arrested in the connection have been extended by two more days. The initial remand period of the accused ended on Saturday.

The extension in remand period was sought by the DCB and Rander police as the valuables, including gold bangles, worn by Indira Parmar on the day she was murdered and Sajid Valodiya's pager are yet to be recovered.

The accused -- Umesh Daulat Desai, Girish Mohan Patel, Mehmood Qasim Tai, Yogesh Ashok Desai, Jayanti Ishwar Odh alias Munna Shanti alias Shantilal and Abdul Majid alias Bhuriya -- have been remanded to police custody until Monday night. While eight people had been arrested earlier, Bhuriya, the driver, was arrested on Friday.

Meanwhile, the police conducted medical examinations of the chief accused Mahesh Desai, Umesh Desai and Bhuriya in the New Civil hospital. The examinations, police sources said, was to examine whether any of the three had molested Indira before murdering her on February 5 evening.

It may be noted that while post mortem reports then had not mentioned poisoning as one of the cause of death besides strangulation, the police maintain that both the deceased were poisoned before being strangled. Investigating officials said that the accused denied that any of them had raped the victim before strangling her to death.

While Mahesh Desai, sarpanch of Mota Varachha village, is presently in police remand until February 17, Usha Maliwad has been sent to judicial custody.
