Randhawa finishes eighth

MUMBAI: Jyoti Randhawa finished joint eighth with two others for his first-ever top 10 result on a European PGA event, as he totalled five under 283 in the Dubai Desert Classic golf tournament according to information reaching here.

Scores: 275: David Howell (69+68+71+67); 279: Lee Westwood (72+71+69+67); 280: Paul McGinley (67+71+75+67), Mark James (73+69+ 69+69); 282: Colin Montgomerie (70+70+72+70), Ed Fryatt (70+70+70+ 72), Wayne Riley (68+70+70+74); 283: Anthony Wall (70+70+72+71), Jyoti Randhawa (73+69+70+71), Miguel-Angel Jimenez (73+67+70+73).

Dungarpur unhappy

MUMBAI: indian cricket board chief Raj Singh Dungarpur today termed as ``an effort to malign Indian cricket'' the allegation of South African coach Bob Woolmer that his team was approached to tank a One-Day International here.``It is a joke. He has taken three years to mention it. It is nothing but to malign us,'' Dungarpur said when asked about his reaction to the allegation mentioned in Woolmer'sdiary for the ``Wisden Cricket Monthly''.

According to Woolmer, the South Africans were asked to lose a one-off one-dayer in aid of former cricketer Mohinder Amarnath held at Wankhede Stadium in December 1996. South African had lost the match by a heavy margin of 74 runs.

Mumbai top

RAJKOT: Mumbai topped the West Zone u-14 cricket league but could not maintain their unbeaten record as hosts Saurashtra inflicted on them a 18-run defeat in the last round-robin match at race course stadium here today.

Elected to bat, Saurashtra made 220 runs for seven wickets with skipper Nikhil Rathod being the main contributor with a 112-ball 119 laced with eleven fours and a six.

Mumbai openers Swapnaj Thakur (69) and Sunil Kukreja (30) provided a good start of 92 runs but after their return, they lost wickets regularly and were all out for 202.

In another match, Baroda beat Gujarat by two wickets. Both Baroda and Mumbai finished with six points each, but since the former lost to the latter in the league,they were placed behind Mumbai.

Kar well placed

CHENNAI: Karnataka were well placed with (176-4) vital first innings lead against Andhra (106 all out), while Hyderabad-Tamil Nadu tie is heading towards a draw in the Sportstar Trophy on the first day of the two-day South Zone round robin league cricket matches here on Sunday.

Brief Scores: Andhra 106 all out in 50.1 overs (R Sandeep 37, Gururaji Chavan 4-32, Abhijit 4-14) vs Karnataka 176-4 in 40 overs (Abhinov Kumar 64, Robin Uthappa 50).
