National Games start at Imphal
You have to fly over perhaps a million mountain peaks before you spot a tiny township spread over a serene land. This town is easily recognisable by the beautiful stadium so clearly visibly from the air as the plane descends. This is the Khuman Lanspak Sports Complex. The President of India, K R Narayanan today inaugurated the fifth National Games, a mega-event that Manipur is unlikely to forget in a long time.Punjab on top
Hyderabad threw away the advantage of a good toss to struggle at 206 for seven against Punjab on the first day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super League match today. The home side, after losing opener Daniel Manohar (6) at 11, were cruising at 132 for one, thanks to the second-wicket stand of 121 runs in 47.5 overs between left-hander Arvind Shetty and A Nanda Kishore.
Kiwis win
A gutsy 95 by Nathan Astle and belligerent hitting from Chris Harris guided New Zealand to an exciting three-wicket victory over South Africa in their limited overs match today. They won with five balls to spare, scoring 215 for seven in reply to South Africa's 211 all out in 49.1 overs.
JCT make grade
Jagatjit Cotton and Textile Mills, Phagwara qualified to the super six stage as they held a determined Tollygunge Aggragami to a 1-1 draw in their last group A match of the third National Football League today. The Phagwara outfit capitalised on some shoddy marksmanship by the home team to escape with a draw and romp into the last six stage with 17 points.
