Christians to observe Feb 21 as national day of prayers

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, FEB 19: Disturbed about the "slow pace of action" by governments on violence against Christians, the community will observe a national day of prayer on Sunday seeking an end to the attacks.

"We are disturbed and disappointed by the slow pace of Justice and failure of the Centre and state governments to step the tide of violence. Governments have promised a lot but failed to fulfill any," Delhi Archbishop and President of Catholic Bishops Conference of India Alan de Lastic told reporters here on Friday.

Prayers will be held in churches throughout the country and collectively at public places including in Delhi where church leaders will call on President K R Narayanan to submit a memorandum.

Alan de Lastic agreed that there had been a "lull" in such violence recently but John Dayal, convener of the United Christian Forum for Human Rights said "oral violence" was still continuing.

To a question whether they suspected an international conspiracy, the archbishop said it would be wrong to blameanyone without a proof. "But it could be some parties who do not want India to do well economically," he said.

"Why should a fringe of the majority community play into their hands even if is was an international conspiracy behind the attacks," he wondered.

About the reported "census" of Christians in Gujarat, the archbishop said it was definitely with some sinister designs that a survey was started while Dayal said it was a "clandestine, motivated census designed to terrorise the minorities".

Resenting statements saying that Hindus were attacking Christians, Alan de Lastic said, "It is a small group of Hindu fanatics or what are called pseudo-Hindus who are responsible for these attacks."
