Services of 19 officials terminated

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Feb 19: In a significant move, the Panjab University Syndicate, today passed a resolution, terminating the services of 19 superannuated officials holding key non-teaching posts.

Prominent among them are Dr I.N. Chaudhary, Secretary to the PU Vice-Chancellor; SK Bijlani, Financial Adviser; Sita Ram, Chief Security Officer; B.S. Ojha, Executive Adviser; B.S. Dhillon, head of the Muktsar Regional Centre; G.S. Gosal; K.K. Dhir, Director, Vocational Studies; T.R. Bajaj, Deputy Librarian; R.P. Kapoor, Deputy Controller (audit), S.C. Sethi, Shiv Dutt Sharma, R.L. Bagha and J.R. Verma.

The proposal which was moved on the floor of the House by Ashok Goyal and seconded by Randeep Singh Surjewala and Rajinder Deepa, was debated upon for more than two hours. Significantly, the V-C, Prof M.M. Puri, reportedly recorded his dissent on the issue. The proposal was supported by Rabindra Nath Sharma, A.S. Bedi, S.S. Gill, S.S. Hundal and Rajinder Bhandari. While G.K. Chatrah, V.K. Bansal, A.R. Sidhu and Dr Yadav dissented.

``For the past six months, the Punjab Government has been writing to the university about paucity of funds and advising that only teaching posts be filled. The budget outlay, in the next term, is also likely to remain the same. This was an unnecessary burden,'' sources said.

Following a proposal by Rajinder Bhandari, the cut-off date for allowing a third chance to compartment cases of undergraduate classes has been increased from April 1997 to 1992. The chance can be availed in the forthcoming September or April exams. The Syndicate rejected the proposal that the Board of studies be constituted through direct election as opposed to the currently prevalent system of single transferable vote. I.M. Govil's proposal to extend the date of posts advertised, by six months was also rejected.

Meanwhile, the Syndicate felicitated G.P. Chopra, fellow, for being awarded the Padamshri and Prof J.M. Kohli's team for securing a Rs 2.48 crore grant for their research project on particle physics. Ph D degrees have been awarded to 27 candidates.
