NEW DELHI, February 19: The Delhi government yesterday decided to lauch a ``Clean-the-Capital'' drive from March 1. It hopes to enlist the support of NGOs, welfare associations and the public to improve sanitation in the Capital.This was decided at a high-level meeting convened by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit yesterday. Those who attended the meeting included officials of the NDMC, MCD, DDA, Cantonment Board and the CPWD. The CM said a plan had been drawn up to coordinate the efforts of all agencies. A month-long drive would be launched from March 1 to coincide with the `Visit India Year'. And the Centre has given assurances that it will provide some funds in this connection.
Dikshit said special cells would be opened where people could make complaints, if any, against the municipal authorities.
The government is focussing on 100 colonies where garbage-collecting trucks go door to door. At present 5,800 to 6,000 metric tonnes of garbage is collected in a day. The government has also prepared a `module' for involving the people in solving local-level problems. Initially, residential and commercial areas of Lajpat Nagar and Bengali Market will be handled. The `module' states that people should separate and collect garbage in jute or paper bags and dispose it of in the nearest garbage lifting point of the MCD between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. n Garbage should be put directly in garbage collecting vans and not burnt or thrown on streets.
Every shop should place a garbage bin or bag in front of the shop or inside.All front areas of the shops should be clean. Shops selling eatables should take specific care.The `module' also states that the MCD and NDMC will render all assistance for setting up garbage disposal points in a particular area, clean up drains and provide information to people. Attendance registers for keeping tabs on safai karamcharis will be made available.
