Mehta shines for Cathedral

MUMBAI, FEB 19: Jay Mehta was instrumental in Cathedral and John Connon School's 2-1 victory over Rajhans Vidyalaya and make the boys team championship final in the MSSA-Colgate 23rd Inter-School lawn tennis tournament at Garden Tennis Academy, Azad Maidan today.

Mehta faced little trouble in putting Gurupathy Swamy on the back seat with scores of 8-2. Garvyl Fernandes of Rajhans however levelled the score when he defeated Krishna Tanna with a similar scoreline.

In the doubles, teaming with Tanna, Mehta scored a thrilling 8-7 (7-3) win over Fernandes and Shetty.

Later in the day, Mehta entered the boys under-14 final when he surpassed Sujai Mahadevan 7-5, 7-5 and will face Rishi Behl who defeated Krishna Tanna 6-4, 7-5. In the boys under-10, top seed Arnav Jain (Jasudben) and second seed Ankesh Bhargava (Bhavans) will clash in the final. Jain got past Rahil Dhruva (Jamnabai Narsee) while Bhargava scored an easy victory over Aniruddha Kowtha 8-3.

In the girls under-14 second semi-finals, third seedSoumya Kowtha (St Anne's) toppled top seed Krushmi Chedda (AVM Juhu) in three long sets. Kowtha was down 1-3 in the final set when she took the control of the game and won five games consecutively to play the final against Anuja Parikh (JB Petit). Parikh also played a three setter against Uttara Rao (Rajhans) before winning 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Top seed Medini Sharma (Gyan Kendra) will play second seed Johan Fernandes (St Theresa). In the semis, both Sharma and Fernandes did not allow their opponents to win even a single game.

Boys U-16 (Semis): Garvyl Fernandes (Rajhans) bt Rohan Gajjar (Jasudben) 6-1, 4-6, 6-4; Vivek Jhaveri (Manav Mandir) bt Ankit Doshi (Greenlawns) 7-5, 6-3.

U-14: Jay Mehta (Cathedral) bt Sujai Mahadevan (Holy Cross) 7-5, 7-5; Rishi Behl (Utpal Sangavi) bt Krishna Tanna (Cathedral) 6-4, 7-5;

U-12: Keshav Narasimhan (St Theresa) bt Shantanu Sahey (M Cooper) 8-2, Krishank Shah (St Xavier's) bt Siddharth Chheda (Don Bosco)8-1

(U-10): Arnav Jain (Jasudben) bt Rahul Dhruva (J Narsee) 8-2, Ankesh Bhargawa (Bhavans) bt Aniruddha Kowtha (Campion) 8-3

Girls U-16: Medini Sharma (Gyan Kendra) bt Gayatri Kerker (JB Vatcha) 6-0, 6-0; Johan Fernandes (St Theresa) bt Siya Gupta (Leaners) 6-0, 6-0.

U-14: Anuja Parikh (JB Petit) bt Uttara Rao (Rajhans) 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, Soumya Kowtha (St Anne's) bt Krushmi Chheda (AVM Juhu) 5-7, 6-4, 6-3

U-12: Kanisha Mehta (Convent) bt Akshata Nayak (Rajhans) 8-0, Moneeza Kalhan Siddiqui (St Anne's) bt Aditi Vasant (Queen Mary) 8-7 (11-9)

U-10: Ananya Mazumdar (Hasanat) w/o Sachi Generiwal (Jamnabai), Roshni Luthra (Arya Vidya Mandir) bt Shruthi Parab (Bombay Scottish) 8-2.
