February 22: Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL)'s Rs 5,500 crore petrochemical project at Jamnagar (Gujarat) would be commisioned ahead of schedule this year. With this, the petrochemical production capacity of RIL will increase by 50 per cent to nine million tonnes per annum (mtpa), an RIL statement said here today.The petrochemical complex includes a 1.4 mtpa of paraxylene (PX) and six lakh tpa of polypropylene (PP) plant. The statement said both the plants are globally competitive enjoying huge economies of scale and enhancement of feedstock, product, energy and logistics is expected to lead to higher value addition.
After the completion of the project, RIL PP capacity will touch nearly one million tonnes making it one of the largest PP producers in the world while the company's PX plant will be the world's largest plant making RIL the third largest manufacturer in world, it said.
RIL sales for nine months ended December 1998 were Rs 10,947 crore against Rs 9,836 crore in the corresponding period lastyear and net profit was Rs 1,323 crore against Rs 1,275 crore respectively, the statement said.
