CALCUTTA, FEB 23: Maneka, the eldest daughter of world famous magician P C Sorcar (Jr) was today named as the ninth successor of the `Indrajal' family to run the traditional trade in the next millennium.P C Sorcar (Jr) announced this after she successfully performed a dare devil feat `Agni Pariksha' at their magic research centre `Indralok' in Baraupur near here before journalists and medical practitioners.
Maneka Sorcar (19), now a first year student in economics, was put inside a sealed wooden box with six dynamites strapped up her waist and chest. Her father first hammered a nail in and his handlers did the rest making the box almost airtight. Then dried hays were put around the box and petrol sprayed before igniting it. Within seconds a booming sound was heard and the box splitted into bits. To a surprise, Maneka was seen coming in an open-hooded jeep parked near the lawn. ``A magnificent feat indeed," exclaimed the crowd.Later she told journalists that it was a tribute to her grandfather P C Sorcar(Sr), the legendary magician, whose 87th birth day was celebrated today.
Sorcar said Maneka, name given by late prime minister Indira Gandhi, was the fittest candidate among his three daughters and innumerable students to carry the flagship of `Indrajal' family to the world.
However, she would not be allowed to perform commercial programmes until she finished her graduation. ``I will allow her to perform on the stage only for fund raising for greater cause of the society.''
``Today's show was my brainchild and first of its kind in the world," an elated Maneka told newsmen after her marvellous feat which paved the way for inheriting the crown of `Indrajal' family. Her father crowned her, that once he and his forefathers used.
