FEBRUARY 23: The All-India Milli Council of Mumbai and Thane has appealed to Home Minister Gopinath Munde to take steps to ensure that peace and communal harmony is maintained in the city on March 29, when Mahavir Jayanti and Bakri Id coincide. In a letter to Munde, AIMC secretary general Haroon Mozawala expressed concern at the Bajrang Dal's intention to float `flying squads' in the city to ensure that no blood was shed on Mahavir Jayanti, declared by the Union government as an Ahimsa Divas (Non-violence day).
``Id-ul-Azha and Mahavir Jayanti coincided last year also, and were celebrated in the right spirit without any untoward incident. We hope that you will not allow mischief-mongers to succeed this year,'' states the letter.
Referring to the Bajrang Dal's posturing on sensitive issues like cow slaughter and a ban on the use of loudspeakers in mosques at its convention on Sunday, Mozawala said speeches ``tend to be provocative'', especially when they are made in the presence of some 40,000 BajrangDal workers.
