Teachers likely to boycott exams

RAJKOT, Feb 23: Teaching staff of all universities in the State have threatened to boycott examinations, if the government does not meet their demands by March 15.

The executive committee of the Gujarat State Teachers Federation will meet on February 25 at Vallabh Vidhya Nagar where it will decide on issuing an university examinations boycott call.

Delegation of Saurashtra University Area Teachers Association, headed by its president P C Barot, met director (education) Swantantra Sheikhon and represented their demands which include fixation of new pay scales before March 15 and thus be paid according to new scales from April 1; arrears be paid by April '99; teachers also be paid vehicle allowances at par with the other State employees; responsibility should be fixed to see that the teachers get their previous month's salary latest by fifth of next month; some universities have adjusted the pay of 26 days strike time against the teachers due leave and these salaries should be paid in the current month itself; ban on recruitment of new teaching staff be lifted immediately; concerned colleges be asked to prepare and submit LTC bills and teachers, who have opted for CPF may be given an alternative to join pension scheme.

They had complained that the decisions taken in the meeting with Education Minister on January 4, 1999 have still not being implemented.
