AHMEDABAD, Feb 23: Coming down strongly on ``the ills that have overtaken society'', Additional City Sessions Judge Bhupendra N Jani sentenced three of a family to life imprisonment for the cold-blooded murder of Bhamraji of Jai Shakti Nagar in Sardarnagar on October 26, 1997.Chandan Singh alias Tenya Dhulaji Thakur, Lakho Malaji Thakur and Manyo Bhavaji Thakur had stabbed Bhamraji to death when he confronted them after Manyo had teased his daughter Naina.
Manyo had harassed Naina when she had gone to the municipal tap in the area to collect water. Unable to bear constant teasing, Naina complained to her father. An infuriated Bhamraji then went to Manyo's house and ``rebuked him about his cheap behaviour''.
But Manyo's relatives soon rallied around him and started abusing Bhamraji saying he had ``spoiled their reputation in front of the whole society'' by confronting them like that. Within minutes Chandan Singh fished out a dagger and stabbed Bhamraji even as the other two caught his hands.
The complaint was lodged by his wife Tulsiben Bhamraji with Sardarnagar police.
In his strongly-worded judgement, the Additional City Session Judge Judge said people in this fast progressing world had lost not only the courage to stand up for their rights but had become so self-centered that only the individual mattered and not the society. Therefore, after examining the nature of crime of the accused, the court had concluded that they deserved the harshest of punishments. He noted that the accused were involved not only in a crime against a bereaved family but the whole society.
