AMC plans tax recovery drives

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Feb 23: With barely a month left for this financial year to end, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is planning to start major property tax and octroi recovery drives to meet the revised target put forward by the municipal commissioner.

A corporation official said that authorities have already started issuing final notices to recover property tax dues. He said the corporation has recovered over Rs 350 crore as property tax which was pending for the past few years. He said with the year ending, the corporation is expected to meet the lowered target of Rs 126 crore by means of recovery drives. All higher officials and their subordinates are allotted areas and are asked to contact the defaulters.

Reports say the corporation has collected Rs 87.10 crore during the year which is about Rs 26.62 crore more than that of the last year. The official said the West Zone recorded an increase of about 119.06 per cent over that of the last year, followed by the head office with 21.70 per cent, North Zone 16.93 per cent, South Zone 16.76 per cent, East Zone 13.53 per cent and the Central Zone with 3.96 per cent increases.

However, the recovery drive in vehicle tax has slowed down for a while after the incident between corporation officials and people near Sardar Patel stadium. Officials said vehicle tax recovery was much below the last year's collection. So far only Rs 1.35 crore was collected against Rs 1.54 crore during last year. But in octroi recovery, the corporation recorded an increase with a recovery of Rs 229.36 crore against Rs 209.79 crore last year which is nine per cent growth. However, this growth has picked up. In December, the growth was only 7.62 per cent which increased to 8.17 per cent in January. In February, the daily octroi income on an average was about Rs 95 lakh.
