HC gives Centre 3 months to decide about Gandhi statue
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, February 23: The Delhi High Court today gave the Centre three months time to decide on the installation of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at India Gate, failing which the court said it would proceed with the public interest petitions filed on the issue. A division bench, comprising acting Chief Justice Devinder Gupta and Justice K.S. Gupta asked the government to take a final decision by May 13.The court direction came after Central government counsel U. Hazarika submitted that the Union Cabinet had recently decided to evolve a consensus, with all political parties, on the installation of the statue at the India Gate canopy. The Centre had some years ago mooted a proposal to install a statue of the Father of the Nation beneath the canopy, which till 1968 had housed a statue of King George V. The All India Freedom Fighters Organisation (AIFFO) opposed the placing of the statue under the canopy. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
