Desert landscapes

Shaan Chavan
Different strokes, they really are! The works of four Pune artists - Ranjana Joshi, Milind Phadke, Sudhakar Chavan and Pandurang Tathe - are vastly different from each other's. Even though all are former students of the Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalay and have had several exhibitions together. The foursome display their collection of works, entitled Different Strokes at Inn Galleria, Holiday Inn, from February 25 to 28.

Joshi, who was previously preoccupied with the colours and images of Rajasthan, has shifted focus to soft-toned, slightly abstract images. In this show, she has included some of her Rajasthan-inspired paintings as well as the new series. Joshi's style is characterised by a strong visual impact in a racy line and wash style.

Chavan is known to experiment with unusual subjects. His art gives vivid expression to the thoughts that trouble his mind. A senior artist, Chavan's powerful imagination creates different worlds. On the other hand, Tathe's paintings invite the viewer to `see' correctly. He uses the language of line, tone and shape to construct elegant images which, though abstract, have so much structural unity.

Milind Phadke's style is is dominated by the experience of the Indian landscape, especially its interpretation. His flights of fancy on canvas are painted with a silver grey tonality and uses warm colours to create a luminous atmosphere. He presents an unusual texture in his Ganesh series at the exhibition. The exhibition promises to provide a variety of images by the four seasoned artists.
