NEW DELHI, February 24: A new-born female baby was strangled to death in the labour room of the Bara Hindu Rao Hospital on December 26, 1998. Despite the fact that the doctors contacted the police immediately, a murder case was registered at the Subzi Mandi police only today.Usha delivered a female baby on December 26 last year. She is the wife of Ram Chander, a safai karmachari in the hospital, say the doctors. They live in the New Anaj Mandi in Filmistan.
Senior doctors say that the post-mortem was conducted immediately, and it was discovered that the baby had been strangled to death. ``We called the police the next day and gave them this information. We even asked them to collect the report. But no one came.'' The doctors allege that the police have been trying to hush up the case. Despite repeated attempts, DCP (North) S.N. Shrivastava could not be contacted, as he was asleep.
Doctors allege that the incident occurred only because the baby was female. They also say that the father tried to bury the matter, using his position as a safai karmachari to lobby support from the union. A senior doctor said, ``The parents were trying to manipulate everything from the beginning. The police is now saying that the parents filed the complaint. But that is not true. It was the doctors who were putting pressure on the police to do something, as it is a very serious matter''.
Now that the case has finally come to light, the police is left with no option but to investigate.
