TDP may finally come around

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, HYDERABAD, Feb 24: By delaying its decision on whether to support President's rule in Bihar, the Telugu Desam Party kept the Vajpayee government dangling today although there were initial indications that party chief Chandrababu Naidu would back the Government.

Claiming that it had received ``positive signals,'' the BJP-led coalition government is going ahead with the discussion on the motion ratifying Central rule in the Lok Sabha tomorrow as announced and the voting on Friday. The motion is now listed as the first item in tomorrow's business. It had been decided by the business advisory committee that voting on the motion would take place on February 26 but talk of the possibility of it being deferred till after Holi is also on.

The whole of today, the government was in constant touch with Naidu through Defence Minister George Fernandes and I&B Minister Pramod Mahajan. Prime Minister A B Vajpayee also spoke to the TDP chief last night. ``We are confident of a positive response,'' said partyvice-president J P Mathur. In Hyderabad, after long meetings with party leaders and ministers, Naidu is understood to have suggested that he would back the Government's motion. TDP insiders said that despite the party's strong opposition to Article 356, it didn't want Congress to take any advantage if the motion falls through in the Lok Sabha.

Top BJP leaders, who are in regular touch with Naidu, are understood to have told him that a defeat in the Lok Sabha might even result in mid-term elections which could benefit the Congress. ``We are not afraid of elections but we do not want to take any decision that will benefit the Congress in any way,'' party spokesman Ummareddy Venkateswarlu told The Indian Express. Also, the TDP will have the consolation that its decision to support the Bill in the Lok Sabha will in no way help continue President's rule in Bihar.
