Footpath vendors hold demonstration

CHANDIGARH, Feb 25: A demonstration was staged by the Footpath Workers Rozgar Bachao Samiti today at the Sector 20 Labour Chowk to protest the alleged callous attitude of the U.T. Administration for not conducting the survey required for issuing practising licences to them.

The workers stated that they were engaged in activities like cycle and shoe repair while the others were earning their living as barbers, dhobis, tandoor operators, old book sellers for the last 25-30 years and contributing to the social cause.

Ramesh Kumar Chandoliya, president of the Samiti, said that they had been forwarded assurance a number of times by the administration but nothing concrete had been done till date. He alleged that they were continuously being harassed by the enforcement staff.

Teachers court arrest
A total of 73 employees of Punjab Aided School Teachers and other Employees Union of districts of Bathinda and Mansa courted arrest in front of the Punjab Civil Secretariat here today.

The teachers are protesting the non-implementation of their demands, which they alleged had been settled by Punjab Finance Minister Kanwaljit Singh. They have already decided to boycott the matric and Plus Two examination duties this year.
