CHANDIGARH, Feb 25: Six witnesses were today examined in jail-break case which came up before UT Additional District and Sessions Judge S.S. Lamba.Nirmal Singh deposed that he was posted as SI, police station, South, Sector 34. On that day he received `rauka' sent by SI Dilsher Singh through Constable Harinder Singh. He added that no secret information had been mentioned in the `rauka' and hence he did not include the same in daily diary entry. It's wrong to say that the FIR is fabricated, he said.
Lamberdar of Ralle village, Parshotam Singh stated that on May 27, 1998, SI Balkar Singh came to inquire about Charanjeet Singh, son of Baldev Singh. He added that he did not know if any Charanjeet Singh was running a cycle repair shop. Santokh Singh, Constable, Burail Jail, deposed that he was to make entries in the visitors' register from September 97 to June 98. He said that the person who came to the jail signed as Charanjeet Singh. He pointed to Satnam Singh as the person who had signed as Charanjeet. J.S. Randhawa, head, customer services, Spice Telecom, stated he handed over records of telephone 9814011957 to the police. He added that the application from was not filled before him.
Deepak Gupta, deputy manager, Essar Commvision Ltd, stated that telephone 9815078457 was issued by Essar in the name of Lakhwinder Singh. His cross-examination has been deferred till tomorrow.
Labh Singh, working as a laboratory attendant in the Health Department, PHC, Gurwan was today recalled for cross-examination. He stated that he did not appear in 12 to 15 cases in Chandigarh. He had not appeared as a witness in the case of Dilsher Singh, he said.
Two residents sent to police remand
UT Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate B.C. Gupta today remanded a city resident Patras Masih, earlier booked under Sections 420, 406, 506 IPC, to two days of police custody.
Asking for a five-day police remand, the prosecution stated that the alleged accused, a property dealer in Sector 30, promised allotment of an HIG flat to one Gurparshad Mittal. He asked the complainant to pay him Rs 7.64 lakh through cheques, but instead of getting a flat allotted to the complainant, he bought a flat for himself in Sector 43. It was further alleged that he prepared a mortgage deed of the complainant's house number 217 in Sector 20-A which he has kept in his village Budha Khera. The police requested for time to recover the deed.
In another case, Ramesh Kumar was sent to two-day police remand under Section 20 of the NDPS Act. Ramesh, in his disclosure statement, said that Ajay from Rajgarh (Himachal) used to come to him with charas. He added that he could help the police recover charas from Ajay.
As against the prosecution's request for a four-day remand, the Magistrate sent him to two-day police custody.
