Mizoram rally to upset Bihar

NEW DELHI, February 25: Strong contenders Mizoram rallied to upset thrice champions Bihar 3-2 in an exciting Group-II quarter-final league match of the Sub-Junior (Under-16) National Football Championship for Justice Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy, at Dr Ambedkar Stadium here today.

In another match of the same group, thrice champions Assam beat hosts Delhi 3-1 to collect full points and notch-up their first win in the league.

Assam now leads the group with four points from two matches and edge out Mizoram, who also have equal points, on better goal average. Bihar trails with three points from two matches and Delhi have yet to open an account after having lost both their matches.

Trailing 0-2 at half-time, Mizoram displayed a remarkable game to come stage a comeback. With an attacking game they outplayed last years' runners-up Bihar and snatched full points.

In the first half, Bihar striker Krishna Tudu capitalised on goalkeeping lapses by Mizoram custodian Billy Laldinsangs to open the account in the 14th minute. The lead was consolidated in the 23rd minute by Malsawmtluanga who took advantage of keeper's mistake to score from close.

After break, Mizoram boys regrouped themselves and reduced the marging 1-2 in the 50th minute through Zoramliana's stunning volley off a corner kick. Mizoram continued to attack with a lot of vengeance and equalised following a corner kick taken by L.R. Ruta.

The match winner came in the 77th minute through a penalty kick awarded to Mizoram after left winger Lalmuamchrhana was tripped in the box by Bihar's right back Sajid Ansari. The penalty was converted by LV Luaia, his 13th goal of the tournament. Luaia is the highest scorer of the tournament so far.

Earlier, thrice champions Assam prevailed over hosts Delhi 3-1. After a goalless first half, Assam opened the account in the 47th minute. Delhi equalised in the 57th minute through Chandan Dora. The winning goals for Assam came in the last ten minutes through a brace by striker Sanjeeva Ronpi.
