MUMBAI, FEB 26: The Indian economy needs change and that too with proper management in order to have a vibrant capital market for the growth of the economy, opined D R Mehta, chairman of the SEBI.Addressing a meeting of the Press Guild of India here today, Mehta said that ``with competitiveness increasing in the world due to globalisation, the vision accepted by one and all should be to modernise the market in terms of infrastructure, attitudes and efficiency.''
He said that for any country to progress, a proper infrastructure is essential and now stress should be laid on building "human infrastructure" by allowing the right kind of people to be in the market. He stressed the need for positive thinking and said that entrepreneurs should be encouraged within the limits of a strong regulatory framework to produce a strong market. ``SEBI needs more powers to help investors and involve them in the process of development by taking them along in the path of change,'' he asserted.
While explaining the waystowards efficiency, Mehta said that competitiveness alone can increase efficiency and it has been proven internationally. Hence, change for the better should be encouraged to bring out the best in each sector.
