Chhatbir plays host to six rare animals

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Feb 26: Six rare and threatened species of animals which were earlier housed at the National Zoological Garden in Delhi have been brought to the Chhatbir Zoo in an exchange programme.

These include four Manipur dancing deers (three female and one male), one Assamese Maccaw (monkey) and a flightless bird, Cassowary. Another male dancing deer, which was to arrive at the Chhatbir Zoo, died during transportation from Delhi.

While the dancing deers have replaced four barking deers which have been sent to Delhi Zoological Garden as per the agreement, the Cassowary male bird from Delhi has been shifted here. The female Cassowary has been sent to the Delhi Zoo for breeding purpose, Chhatbir Zoo director Vinod Sharma said.

In order to the maintain cleanliness in the zoo, work has been handed over to private companies, he said.
