Theatres not ready to play with Fire

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Feb 26: Despite having obtained a clearance from the Censor Board, the controversial film Fire has few takers. Although advertisements have appeared in various newspapers announcing its release at West End theatre on February 26, the owners have decided against screening it.

State joint organiser of Patit Pawan Sanghatana Sandeep Khardekar said that they had approached the theatre manager on Wednesday informing him that they would not stage demonstrations outside the theatre but would be present to explain the reasons for opposing the screening of the film. ``However, the theatre owners decided against screening the film,'' he said.

``We had given them option to screen the film with a few cuts. Either they should omit the names of the two main characters Radha and Sita or change them,'' he said.

The PPS has also demanded deletion of the Chinese character in the film and scene where the family servant is shown masturbating while watching a blue film in the presence of the mother-in-law.

When contacted, the theatre staffers denied any plans to screen the film.
