Titles for Shillong, MP

AMBALA, Feb 26: Regional Sports Board, Shillong clinched the men's team championship defeating Chennai 3-2 in a well-contested final of the All-India Civil Services badminton tournament here today. Among women, Madhya Pradesh beat Delhi 2-0 for the title.

T Yabnag put Shillong ahead when he beat T Maran 15-2, 15-2 in the first singles match in the men's final. K R Shiv Kumar restored the parity when he beat Shillong's A Bweagohain 15-1, 15-6. Chennai then forged ahead when their pair of T Maran and S Dravid defeated Shillong's Padma K and R Joshi 15-6, 15-6. However, R Joshi (Shillong) made it 2-2 beating R Shri Niwas Reddy (Chennai) 15-7, 15-9. In the decider, B Burman and T Yabang (Shillong) prevailed over K R Shiv Kumar and Shri Niwas Reddy (Chennai) 15-9, 15-8 to give Shillong the title win.

The women's final was a one-sided afair. Madhya Pradesh took the lead when Sangeeta got a walk over from Delhi's Amarjeet Kaur. Sangeeta and Vandana then defeated Amarjeet Kaur and Renu Balla 15-3, 15-4 in doubles to bag the title.

Earlier in the men's semifinals, RSB Shillong beat RSB Kanpur 3-0 while RSB Chennai beat RSB calcutta 3-1.

Among women, Delhi beat Central Secretariat (Delhi) 2-0 while MP beat Karnataka by the same margin in the two semifinals.

In the women's singles event, Saroj Chaudhary of RSB, Chandigarh scored a 11-3, 11-0, facile win over Ritu Pathak (Uttar Pradesh), to enter the quarterfinal stage. Umesh of (Kanpur) also scored 11-6, 11-0 victory over Urvashi (Gujarat) to get a berth in the last eight stage of the meet. In the other pre-quarterfinal matches held, Vandana Saxena (MP) got a walk over from S Indumati (Karnataka) while Amarjeet Kaur (Delhi) beat Neera (CS Delhi) 11-6, 11-5.

Results
Men: Final: RSB Shillong bt RSB Chennai 3-2. Semifinals: Shillong bt Kanpur 3-0, Chennai bt Calcutta 3-1.

Women: Final: MP bt Delhi 2-0. Semifinals: Delhi bt Central Sectt. Delhi 2-0, MP bt Karnatka 2-0.
