PANAJI, Feb 27: With paedophiles from the West flocking to Goa, the authorities are considering establishing a child protection unit comprising of police officials, social workers and others to prevent sexual abuse of minors.Government officials including Governor Lt Gen (Retd) J F R Jacob and senior advisor M N Buch have discussed the proposal with child rights activist Sheela Barse.
Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala have already taken an initiative in this regard and are pooling their resources in preventing abuse of children.Among the proposals mooted by Barse, who was instrumental in exposing Freddy Peats -- a notorious paedophile -- is the setting up of a hotline to aid children in distress.
Barse told The Indian Express that a large number of paedophiles were finding their way into India due to absence of rigorous checks and controls.
She suggested that the authorities secure from international bodies like Interpol, FBI, etc. a list of child-abusers wanted worldwide so that theiractivities could be curbed in India as well.
Barse admitted that it was difficult to track the movement of tourists in Goa as shack owners and people who rent rooms to them do not keep proper documentation. Several of them do not even fill the mandatory `C' form which has to be registered with the authorities.
According to Barse, Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala are increasingly becoming part of sex itineraries. Paedophiles who target Indian children are also setting up networks in the country whereby traffickers procure children from other parts of India and initiate them in the sex trade, Barse alleged.
