Two nurses in Delhi allege sexual harassment at work

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, FEB 27: Two nurses at the Central government-run Lala Ram Swaroop Hospital for TB and Associated Diseases, Mehrauli, have complained that they have been sexually harassed by a doctor and a hospital director. The doctor and the director, however, deny the allegations.

According to the nurses, Dr S B Singh and director Dr V K Arora have been walking into their rooms at night and harassing them.

"Singh came to my duty room one night and asked me to take an LIC policy. When I refused he said that he would go if I promised to provide two of the nurses - one each for him and the director," says Betty, a nurse (name changed). The nurse has complained to the National Commission for Women, the police as well as to the Union Health Minister. According to Sister Mona (name changed), Singh went to her duty room last month and asked her to spend the night with him. She said that Singh has been making passes at other nurses too. "On February 18, the director (Arora) visited my room at 3 am and locked itfrom inside and made sexual advances. When I resisted he threatened me with suspension," Mona says.

S B Singh denies the allegations saying that they were fabricated. Five casual workers were terminated last month and two employees suspended. These nurses have joined hands with the workers union to malign the administration, he said. Arora too denied the allegations. "These are all false stories," he says. "I went to Mona's room that day as I had received complaints that nurses are sleeping in duty hours. I was accompanied by two security guards and when I knocked on the closed door she did not open it for five minutes confirming my doubt that she was asleep." Arora says Mona has been accused of depositing a stolen hospital cheque in a false account and Singh is inquiring into it.
