NEW DELHI, March 3: A gangster and his uncle were apprehended by the South-West district police in Najafgarh yesterday evening following an encounter. Kapil, who is an accused in the murder of gangster Balraj, was arrested from Mitraon village following a car-chase and shoot-out.According to the police, around 3.30 p.m., policemen at a picket near Dhansa bus-stop tried to flag down a Maruti Zen. There were apparently five people in the car, who sped away when the policeman indicated that they should pull over. One of the constables recognised Kapil and a car-chase followed which led the policemen to Kapil's house in Mitraon village.
Kapil reportedly locked the gate to his house and then opened fire on the policemen. Kapil's uncle was caught in the cross-fire and was hit on the shoulder. According to the police, Kapil's uncle was also in the car and fired at the policemen first.
Meanwhile, the other occupants of the car managed to call a few neighbours for help and they apparently pelted the policemen with stones. While the two other occupants of the car fled the scene, Kapil was arrested. A Webley Scott pistol and some cartridges were recovered from his person.
Since the situation seemed to be getting out of hand, the policemen bundled Kapil and his uncle into the car and drove to the Najafgarh police station for reinforcements. But none of the other occupants of the car could be traced later.
A case of rioting and attempted murder has been registered against the two.
Kapil is said to be a member of the Kishen gang and is also said to be the mastermind behind the murder of gangster Balraj in April. In retaliation, Kapil's father was killed by gangster Anup, who is also wanted in Samata Party candidate Ved Singh's murder.
Municipal Councillor of the area Vimla Choudhary, however, has alleged that the encounter was ``fake''. ``Kapil and his friends were entering the house when the police opened fire,'' says Choudhary. ``The first shots were fired by the police and not by Kapil.'' Choudhary visited the incident site this morning.
