BJP's `anti-betrayal' week begins

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, MAR 3: The BJP units throughout the country is observing `anti-betrayal' week from Wednesday to protest the betrayal of Dalits and democracy by the Congress and the Left parties on the Bihar issue, party's all-India general secretary M Venkaiah Naidu said here in Chennai on Tuesday.

He told mediapersons that the double standards of these parties, which earlier were highly critical of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Government in Bihar, were exposed when they voted against the resolution on imposition of President's rule in that State.

Asked if the BJP-led Government at the Centre would reinstate the Rabri Devi Government in Bihar in view of the likely defeat of the motion in the Rajya Sabha, Naidu said such reports were speculative. The Centre is considering various options. There is enough time, he said, adding that defeat in the Rajya Sabha did not necessarily mean that the Rabri Devi Government would have to be restored.

The BJP has the responsibility of protecting the people of Bihar and thecountry from the `jungle raj' in Bihar, he added.

On the AIADMK demand for dismissal of the DMK Government in Tamil Nadu in the wake of the ouster of the RJD Government in Bihar, Naidu said no Government could be dismissed merely on the basis of the law and order situation. He said the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu is not satisfactory. However, that alone would not do as a State Government could be dismissed only on the ground of breakdown of the Constitution, he said. Such a situation has not arisen in Tamil Nadu, he said.

Every political party has the right to criticise the law and order situation in any State, but if State Governments had to be dismissed on the basis of the law and order, every Government would have to be dismissed, Naidu said.

The BJP-led Government was not yielding to blackmail, he asserted. The Union budget showed that various points of view were taken into account. The West Bengal package was an example. He was sure that all allies of the BJP would act in a mature andresponsible manner, keeping in mind the national interests and the people's mandate for rule by the BJP.

He described the Budget as pro-poor, pro-farmer and in favour of development and growth. The Opposition parties like the Congress and the Left could not find fault with the Budget. The increases in prices of rice, wheat, diesel and LPG by the BJP-led Government were not as high as those effected by the Congress and the United Front Governments, he said.
