MUMBAI, March 4: The Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa is contemplating action against city lawyer Nandlal Sunderdas Balwani for hurling chappals at a division bench of the Chief Justice of India, Dr A S Anand, in the Supreme Court. The lawyer who committed the contempt last week in New Delhi has been put behind bars for four months and slapped a fine of Rs 2,000.``The item (for taking action against him) is definitely on the agenda of the general body meeting to be held at Nagpur on the 27th and 28th of this month,'' informed Prashant Kedarpawar, secretary of the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa. The `suo moto' action will be taken under section 35 of the Advocates Act, he added.
That Balwani's contempt of court has shocked the Bombay Bar was evident at a meeting of the Bar Council Association last week, when one of the speakers in his speech, heaved a sigh of relief that the lawyer was not one of the reputed ones. In fact, the lawyer had registered with the city Bar Council only in 1995.
Under theAct, the Bar Council can bar Balwani from practicing law on a permanent or a temporary basis. The minimum period for which he can be barred is six months. The action has to be approved by the executive committee and the general body.
