Gupta, Ratti qualify

BANGALORE:Top Indian shuttlers Abhin Shyam Gupta and Sachin Ratti have qualified for the men's singles event of the Swedish Open badminton championship, which began at Borlange yesterday.

In the qualifying rounds, Gupta scored straight games victory over Johan Holm, Simon Krurtson and Henrik Croona (all from Sweden), while Ratti got past Swedish players Frederik Hann, Andreas Ehn and Marcus Jansson, a release from the Badminton Association of India said here.

In theladies' singles, Manjusha Kanwar was beaten by China's Sun Jian 5-11, 10-13. Majusha led 10-8 in the second game, but failed to capitilise on the lead.

Special olympics

NEW DELHI: Over 1,000 mentally retarted children are expected to participate in the three-day 10th Delhi Special Olympics beginning here on March 10.

Children from over 20 institutions will compete in two team events-- cricket and football-- and 37 athletic events. Participants would be grouped on the basis of their ability and divided into age groups.

While four teams will compete in cricket, to be played under normal rules, the six-team football competition would be six-a-side affair played on a field half the size of a normal ground. Athletic events include high jump, long jump, soft ball and shot put.

Paes felicitated

PANAJI:

Indian tennis star Leander Paes expressed his confidence that he would reach the top in doubles. Paes was speaking to reporters after he was felicitated for his contribution intennis for India. He was presented a traditional lamp at the hands of advisor to the governor Mr M N Buch, who was the Chief guest for the function at Clube Tennis de Gasdpar dias Miramar.

India thrash Lanka

CALCUTTA: India sailed into the final thrashing Sri Lanka 7-1 in the Inter Army friendship football tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium.

The Indian Armymen struck thrice in the first session, with skipper Lal Machuana scoring a brace and Saroj Gurung netting another.

The Indians maintained relentless pressure on their opponents in the second half, and struck four goals to wrap up the match.
