CHANDIGARH, March 5: UT Civil Judge (Junior division) Jasbir Singh has summoned People For Animals through its chairperson Maneka Gandhi and Payal Sodhi, in charge, Chandigarh chapter of PFA for June 14, in a civil suit seeking the court to direct the defendants to hold elections of the local chapter of PFA, send statement of accounts to members of PFA and meanwhile, restrain Payal Sodhi from collecting funds from anywhere. In a suit filed earlier on December 3 last year, the plaintiffs Amar Sidhu and Nandini Kakar had stated that although there is a provision of holding elections to every chapter of PFA, no elections had been held to the Chandigarh Chapter since years, despite requests from members.
It was added that although as per the constitution of the trust the statement of account has to be audited and the accounts are open to public scrutiny, the same is not even shown to members of the Chandigarh chapter. It was further stated that no regular meetings were held.
The plaintiffs added that in the absence of a regular doctor here, work was being done by helpers in utter violation of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. They also mentioned that the shelter being run by PFA was in a poor condition and the animals were suffering. They stated that these lapses were occurring on account of money not being spent on the welfare of animals.
No proper register of medicines was being maintained and a number of ailing dogs had even died in utter violation of animal laws, it was added.
