Gurcharan leads field in Dingko, Jitender's absence

New Delhi, March 5: Bangkok Asiad bronze medallist Gurcharan Singh will lead the Indian challenge in the absence of Dingko Singh and Jitender Singh in the YMCA-Coca Cola international boxing championship to be held in Delhi from March 6 to 10.

Boxers from ten Asian countries, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Mauritius and Seychelles, Bangladesh and Pakistan besides India, will take part in the meet.

Star attraction of the boxing meets, Bangkok Asian Games gold medallist Dingko Singh and Commonwealth silver medallist Jitender Kumar will be the promiment names skipping the tournament. Both players are out of action due to injuries. Dingko Singh, who claimed India's first Asian Games gold in 16 years in December, is nursing a hand injury suffered during his exhibition bout against Balaramulu of Andhra Pradesh at the Imphal National Games last month. In the final at the National Games he had received a walkover against Birju Sah of Bihar, but took part in the exhibition bout to please the crowd that had assembled to watch him in action.

Jitender Kumar, who won the middleweight silver at the September Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games and claimed gold at the National Games also hurt his hand during Holi at his native village in Haryana.

YMCA will also honour Dingko Singh, Jitender Singh, Gangopadhyay and Gurcharan Singh on the occassion.

Sunny Grover's fine spell (5 for 19) and equally breezy 51 by Sunil More helped East Colts to reach the semi-final of the eighth Nawab tournament beating Winners Club by seven wickets at Polic Chowki ground, Yamuna Vihar.Brief scores: East Colts: 116 for 3 (Sunil More 51, Vinay Singh 25, Naushad 2 for 28) bt Winners Club: 112 (Naushad 21, Sunny Grover 5 for 19, Sunil More 3 for 27, Neeraj Jain 2 for 20).
