In the second shootout in as many days, two unidentified persons shot at hotel owner Sainath Shetty at Malvani gate no. 1 at Malad (west) at around 8.45 pm on Sunday.

According to the police, Shetty, who owns Abhinandan Bar in Ghatkopar, was hit on the chest and abdomen. He was rushed to the Bhagwati hospital at Borivli (west). His condition is stated to be serious.

11-yr-old raped at Dahisar

A 11-year-old girl was raped by an unidentified man near the railway tracks at Dahisar early on Thursday. According to a complaint filed at the Borivli railway police station, the girl was standing on the platform on Dahisar railway station waiting to board a Churchgate-bound train when a young man approached her and offered her some drugged sweets.

After drugging her, the man took her to the bushes that line the tracks after Dahisar station and raped her.

WR worker hit by stone

A Western Railway employee was injured in a stone-throwing incident on Saturday.Sangare Ahmed Khan was standing inside a second class compartment on his way to Mumbai Central when he was hit while the travelling between Lower Parel and Mahalakshmi. He was injured on the finger on his right hand. A complaint has been lodged with the Mumbai Central railway police.

Five held for cheating

Five persons were arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Crime branch on Saturday for allegedly duping an army personnel of Rs seven crore.Virajilal Vora, Rajesh Vora, Sunayana Vora, Ranjana Vora and Namrata Vora are partners in a ball bearing firm Rishab Recession Bearing Limited, based in Surendranagar, Gujarat. The firm also has an office in Mumbai at Cuffe Parade. Police said the complainant Captain Somesh Batra had bought shares worth Rs seven crore from the company. In 1998, promoted by falling share prices, Batra decided to sell his stake and take back his money. According to Batra, the accused failed to give Batra his money back. After making inquires and gathering evidence againstthe Voras, a team of the Economic of the Economic Offences Wing arrested the five accused.

Asthika Samaj's platinum jubilee

The Asthika Samaj, Matunga, one of the oldest cultural and religious institutions of Mumbai, will celebrate its platinum jubilee with month-long cultural and religious programmes from Saturday in which artists in Carnatic music, Bharatnatyam and other fine arts are scheduled to participate. The Samaj has also organised a series of Harikatha Kalakshepams and discourses by scholars from the south. The Samaj has taken up repairs and renovation work of the temple complex and also the two attached Kalyana mandapams.
