CHANDIGARH, MARCH 7: The film Shaheed Udham Singh is not the usual chronicling of the great martyr's life, if one were to go by director Chitrarth Singh's statements. ``We are making a political statement here for it is all about the making of Ram Mohammed Singh Azaad which Udham Singh addressed himself as.'' Chitrarth spoke to Newsline in between shots at a dargah in Manakpur Sharif. The film, the muhurat of which was shot at Patiala on December 26, got on the rolls this afternoon with Amrish Puri facing the camera as the sufi saint who inspired Udham Singh, played by Raj Babbar. ``It is a film in Hindustani with a Punjabi dialect,'' Babbar said. He expressed his happiness at the latest trend in the Punjabi film world for ``there is a definite change in the attitude of distributors.'' So how can Babbar be made into the 20-something Udham Singh? With a laughter, Babbar, who looked younger, said: ``The make-up man has got a youthful beard.''
With screenplay by Atul Tiwari and dialogue by Surjit Patar, the film is relevant for modern times as was evident in the song picturised on Amrish and the gang. For it said, ``Aithe karma de hote ne nabede, kise na teri jaat puchchni''.
Chitrath felt that many Punjabis did not know about the real mission of Udham Singh. ``For he saw India in a cosmopolitan light. And I intend to highlight the binding and the togetherness that was always there in Punjab.'' The film will bring Shatrughan 'shot gun' Sinha, who does the role of an assistant jailor and Ranjeet, who will be seen as the Giani, the mentor of Udham Singh, to the city in the next fortnight.
