Boycott threat by teachers shadows college exams

JATIN GANDHI
CHANDIGARH, Mar 7: Uncertainty clouds the Punjab University undergraduate examinations, scheduled for April, more so the practical exams, which begin on March 15, with the college and university teachers threatening to boycott the exams. The teachers have been demanding the complete implementation of revised University Grants Commission pay scales. Private college teachers, on the other hand have expressed resentment over being left out in the Punjab government notification on pay scales.

Presidents of the All India Federation of University Teachers' Associations (AIFUTA) and the Punjab University Teachers' Association (PUTA), Dr P.P. Arya and Dr Satya Pal Gautam, respectively, sat on a 48-hour hunger strike outside the office of the Vice-Chancellor on February 4 and 5. Both the bodies have already given a call for boycott of examinations and the teachers will take out a rally and march to the Punjab Assembly on March 12.

On the other hand, Dr V.K. Tewari, national secretary of the All India Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisations (AIFUCTO) in a statement released to the press has ``warned the Punjab government that the AIFUCTO would be compelled to approach the Central government and also to organise protest actions if the government failed to do justice soon.''

With less than a month to go for the exams, the University has finally made decision regarding the examination in the subject of Environmental Education for undergraduates. This year the final year students would deemed to have cleared the subject on production of a certificate indicating that they had attended seven lectures in the subject.

Beginning next year (April 2000), the university would again hold the exam. The students who are now in the second year of graduation will have to appear for the exam then. As for those who are now in the first year, they can take the exam either next year or the year after.

g g g g With the Punjab government asking the varsity to execercise fiscal discipline and raise its own resources, a fee hike is on the cards. The fee revision committee, has already drawn up a list of comparative fee structure of the universities in the region. The committee in its meeting on March 9 will draw up the recommendations for the revised fee structure.
