Hunt for ULFA men's killers on -- police

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
GUWAHATI, MARCH 10: Assam Police today said efforts were on to nab the culprits involved in the rocket propelled grenade (RPG) attack on a multi-storied apartment here and the subesequent violence unleashed in the state.

An official statement issued by the Assam Police said thorough investigations in the violent incidents of the past few days were progressing and the culprits would be brought to book soon.

The statement also denied the involvement of senior police officers in the RPG attack as alleged by United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) publicity secretary Mithinga Daimary in the local media.

A section of the local media reported that Daimary denied over telephone the involvement of ULFA in the grenade attack at the apartment and alleged the operation was launched by the police under the leadership of a senior police official.

The local media also reported that ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Barua had claimed over telephone the killing of eight family members of ULFA activists was a deep-rootedconspiracy of the state government to encourage fratricidal killings in the state.

The Assam Police statement said, ``The reports are totally false and malicious and the police department has nothing to do with the attack''.

People are requested not to get misled by such reports and extend a helping hand to solve these crimes, the statement said. A Nagaon report, quoting official sources added that nine suspected ULFA militants, including seven women, were arrested by the police.

Several documents and photographs were recovered from their possession, the sources added.
