AHMEDABAD, MARCH 10: Even as the source of the mysterious gas leak continue to elude the authorities, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) said that it will suggest to the disaster management committee of Ahmedabad district to install automatic gas monitoring equipment in key areas.Such an equipment, designed to pick up leak of a particular type of gas, can be installed in areas with higher risk of exposure to any type of gas, said Gujarat Pollution Control Board member secretary G B Soni. He said the Gujarat Pollution Control Board has asked for World Bank's aid for cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Bharuch and Valsad. Each such instrument costs around Rs 5 to 6 lakh.
Soni ruled out the leakage from some industrial unit. In all probability the gas leaked from a tanker or it was an H2S build-up in sewerage line of sewerage treatment plant, he said. He also said that no industry around the city uses H2S as raw material. Meanwhile, the GPCB says it will implement hazardous waste tracking system in vehicles carrying such waste by 2000.
Meanwhile, Naroda MLA Dr Maya Kodnani on Wednesday gave notice in the Assembly for calling attention motion on the leak.
