Narmada PAPs accuse States of misleading SC

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, MARCH 10: Tribals and peasants in the Narmada valley have decided to confront the respective State Governments for allegedly giving wrong information about resettlement in the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP). They have also decided not leave the villages under the threat of submergence.

The consensus emerged at a meeting of Project Affected Persons (PAPs)from Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The meeting was held recently at Jalsindhi on the banks of Narmada recently.

According to Sanjay Sangvi of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), the villagers stated that the claims of concerned governments about resettlement were far from the reality.

The villagers observed that the Supreme Court's interim order to allow height of the dam up to 85 meters would cause more submergence.

While villagers of Manibeli, first affected village in Maharashtra, reiterated not to give up in the face of pressure Keshavbhau Vasave, one of the tribal activists from Nimgavhan village in Maharashtra, said that although benefits of the dam won't accure till the 110 metre height is achieved, it is only to intimidate the tribals that the Government is bent upon getting permission to restart the work.

Sangvai claimed that offers from the governments for land for outstees up to 90 meters have been found fraudulent as on at least 19 sites the land were not available and the Madhya Pradesh Government itself rejected land because of certain problems. He alleged that the Gujarat Government had presented a picture far from reality in the Court.

According to him, the tribals will also confront the Narmada Control Authority (NCA) about alleged violation of the tribals' right to life and other democratic human rights.

The villagers demanded that there should be a comprehensive approach towards the project and resettlement issue. They also reiterated for the comprehensive review of the project.
