Sahib Singh Verma's nephew arrested for jumping bail
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, MARCH 10: Neeraj Kumar, a nephew of former chief minister Sahib Singh Verma, who had jumped interim bail, was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on Monday. The police recovered a .45 Colt pistol, with an `US property, US Army' etching, from his possession. Neeraj had been in Tihar Jail for over a year in connection with his alleged involvement in a 1997 murder case. In January this year, he had obtained interim bail from the Delhi High Court. He was to have produced himself in the city court, where his case is being heard, by the third week of February, when the period of the interim bail expired. But Neeraj had been absconding since then.On Monday, a team from the Special Cell went to Dilshad Garden looking for Anoop Singh -- suspected to be the mastermind in the killing of Samata Party candidate Ved Singh at Mundka in November last year. The police had received a tip-off that Anoop Singh would be meeting a contact near GTB Enclave in Dilshad Garden. They found Neeraj in the place instead. Though Neeraj's involvement in Ved Singh's murder is yet to be established, DCP Ashok Chand said Neeraj and Anoop Singh have a close association. ``Neeraj has told us that he jumped bail because he wanted to eliminate all witnesses in hiscases. And he wanted to take Anoop Singh's assistance in this regard,'' said Chand. ``In fact, recently, he had handed over a .30 Mauser and 25 cartridges to Anoop to kill one of the witnesses, Kapil from Mitrao village. Also, ever since he came out on interim bail, he had been extorting money from property dealers in Nangloi''. Chand added that in December 1997, Neeraj along with his brother Pawan, killed gangster Devinder. Even after he was arrested a few months later, he issued threats to Ved Singh who was a witness in the case. Neeraj and his friends were also involved in a robbery in 1991. He was arrested and released on bail in 1993. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
