Australian Open champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the second seed, was upset by Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil 0-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 while fifth-seeded Patrick Rafter, who has won the last two US Opens, was ousted by 21-year-old Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-5.

Sampras, who was bounced in the second round last week, plays his first match here today.
