Ramanand, Suresh Singh shine; Yefymovyeh best

Press Trust of India
March 10: Featherweight Ramanand and lightfly S Suresh Singh scored fluent title victories as host pugilists captured five of the six titles decided today in the senior section in the VI YMCA International boxing championship which concluded here.

But Ukrainian boys showed they were head and shoulders above their rivals to sweep to all four titles they fought, totally dominating their Indian rivals with speed, skill and stunning power at the Jaisingh Road ring.

The 17-year-old Ukrainian Oleg Yefymovyeh, who clinched the junior featherweight title with a splendid 17-9 points win over V Harikrishnan, youngest brother of former World Cup bronze medallist Venkatesh Devarajan, was declared the best boxer of the championship.

Narendra Rana (Ind) steadily picked up points with outside punches to beat the unorthodox Leki of Bhutan 35-7 while Bangkok Asian Games bronze medallist Gurcharan Singh (Ind) unleashed a barrage of blows in beating Shiv Pratap Chopra (Ind) in the lightheavy final.

International HarpalSingh (Ind) took the super heavy title when his Sri Lankan rival Ajantha Gamini surprisingly indicated to his corner to throw in the towel and retired in the second round when he was actually leading his opponent.

Yevgen Dandusky, declared the best junior boxer, outboxed Ankit Kumar (Ind) to force the referee to stop the contest in the third round. The well-built 17-year-old unleashed a barrage of left hooks and right straight punches to leave the Indian lad's face battered with his nose bleeding and force the referee to stop further punishment in the third round.

Dandusky's bantamweight teammate Viktor Polayrov was also ruthless in forcing Sombahadur Pun (Ind) to retire in the third round.
