136 SGPC members demand Tohra's ouster

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CHANDIGARH, March 12: As many as 136 out of the 180 elected Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee members today demanded removal of G S Tohra from its presidentship, saying they had lost faith in him.

At an emergency meeting of the SGPC general house here today, convened by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president and Punjab Chief Minsiter Parkash Singh Badal, the members also decided to adopt procedures as per law to replace Tohra, Badal told reporters here after the meet.

He said the meeting authorised him (Badal) to appoint the SGPC's new president as the members had lost confidence in Tohra and to take any decision in view of the developments in the SGPC. In reply to a question, Badal said the name of the new SGPC president was yet to be decided.

The meeting was attended by nominated SGPC members from Lucknow, Mumbai and Delhi, he said, adding at least four members could not come due to ``personal reasons''.

The members held the view that the SGPC's functioning was not democratic and they were nottaken in confidence in its affairs, Badal said, and alleged that Tohra was ``misutilising'' the SGPC funds.

He told the members that they should take responsibility to celebrate the 300th year of the birth of Khalsa in a befitting manner. Stating that the main agenda of the meet was the tercentenary celebrations, Badal said an important meeting of the Central Committee of Khalsa Celebrations would be held at Ludhiana tomorrow.
