MUMBAI, MARCH 17: A state-of-the-art cancer treatment centre has recently been set up at Nair Hospital at a cost of around Rs six crore.Dr Ravi Rananavare, professor of radiology department in the hospital said the centre has facilities for treatment of all types of cancers, like cancer of lungs, cervix, breast and larynx. Appropriate treatment in the form of radiation, surgery or chemotherapy, or a combination of these is provided to patients, he explained.
The doctor said the centre has the latest equipment for cancer treatment, and the hospital is in the process of setting up a mammography unit which will help early detection of breast cancer among women. He explained there is a high-risk group among women who are more likely to get this disease. They should get themselves screened regularly at this unit. Early detection of breast cancer can help in treatment and in increasing life-span of a patient, he pointed out.
The department is already treating about 50 patients every day, he said. The cost oftreatment at this centre will be considerably less than that at private centres, Dr Rananavare said.
