Punjab BJP backs teachers

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, March 17: Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party president Daya Singh Sodhi, MP, today urged the state government to accept the demands of the teachers, which, he said, were genuine.

He recalled that the Akali Dal-Janata alliance in 1978-79 had decided to give parity to teachers in private schools with their counterparts in the government. At that time also, Parkash Singh Badal was the Chief Minister.

Sodhi said though the Jain Commission report on the pay revision of teachers had put additional burden on the state exchequer, the demands were genuine.

He appealed to the Chief Minister to sort out the irritants across the table with the members of the academic community. He also called upon the teachers to end the boycott of examinations.
