Most wanted Munshi shot dead

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, March 17: By far the most wanted criminal of the city, Farooq Munshi alias FM was shot dead by the police in an ``encounter'' behind a dargah beside the Surat Dumas Road on Wednesday morning. Munshi was shot dead after he reportedly fired at police officials who had escorted him to the spot at 7.40 am.

Munshi, the police said, was arrested by Crime Branch sleuths at around 3:30 am on Wednesday, while he was sleeping in S H Jewellers showroom on Pirchhadi Road area along with one Saiffuddin, working as an accountant there. Based on prior information, the police raided the showroom and took both into custody. He was then arrested in connection with the Ashit Africawala case, and confessed during his interrogation that he had hidden a revolver underneath a couple of stones behind Pir Mohammed Shah Vali Baba Ki Dargah.

A DCB team, led by PI M G Kaneriya and PSI R H Hadiya escorted him to the dargah, a lonely spot opposite the Parle godown a little ahead of the Lalbhai Contractor stadium at around 7:15 am. F M was handcuffed and was asked to show the weapon. Additional Commissioner of Police H P Singh said that even as he removed the weapon from under the boulders, he turned and fired a shot at Kaneriya, who ducked and returned fire in self defence, killing him on the spot. A diary, driving licence and a locket were recovered from his body. Neither of the two police officials standing alongside were injured.

The police said that the weapon was a Smith and Wesson .32 bore revolver. One used cartridge and four live cartridges were recovered from the spot. Munshi received two bullet injuries one fired by each official -- on either side of the navel in the abdomen area and succumbed on the spot. There were no exit wounds. He was shifted to the New Civil hospital after the panchnaama at around noon, where a post mortem was conducted.

According to Singh, Munshi had come over from Anand on Tuesday night and stayed at S H Jewellers showroom as he was acquainted with Zuber Choksi, the owner. Saiffuddin has been arrested on charges of harbouring a criminal while Choksi is being questioned further. Singh said that Kaneriya had got information of the gangsters' whereabouts through an informer, who accompanied the raid party.
