Trainee missing for last 9 months

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, March 17: Mystery shrouds the disappearance of a 30-year old policeman while he was undergoing training at the Police Training School here in May last.

Ashwin Dhanabhai Chamar, a resident of Dehgam taluka in Gandhinagar district, had joined the State Reserve Police Force initially. However, after six months he felt that the mainstream police job was more lucrative that SRPF and hence joined the armed unit of the state police in Ahmedabad.

He was sent for two months training in PTS here. He, however, disappeared all of a sudden from PTS on May 30, 1998. When he did not return, the PTS authorities sent a notice to Commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad, about the trainee's disappearance on June 6, 1998. An FIR was also lodged with the Navapura police station the same day, according to PTS principal H C Solanki.

An official communication about his disappearance was also sent to his parents. His parents, however, deny the receipt of any notice or information from PTS about their son's disappearance.

According to investigation officer in the case, who recorded statements of the PTS officials and colleagues of the missing cop, Ashwin was present at the time of attendance on May 29 night. He was, however, found missing the next day.

Failure of the police to trace Ashwin forced his wife Gita to move the Gujarat High Court. In her revision petition, Gita said that the police had not taken adequate steps to trace her husband.

When contacted, Solanki said that he had done all possible to uncover the mystery.``But one is always free to go to court if he or she feels so'', he stated.
