Railway stations to get a face-lift

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, March 17: Western Railway is carrying out massive renovation at its stations in the Vadodara division and planning to run the Ahmedabad-Rajkot train with new rakes in a week.

Before flagging off the renovated Gujarat Queen with new rakes, divisional manager K C Jena told reporters today that platforms 2, 3 and 4 in Ahmedabad would be resurfaced, the waiting halls expanded and cushion seats provided in the first class waiting hall in Ahmedabad soon.

While Vadodara station will be renovated at a cost of Rs 1.83 lakh, a new station building at Anand, and a platform and a station building on the rear side at Nadiad are planned.

A shed at a cost of Rs 25 lakh will be provided at Maninagar for which tenders have been been called. There are proposals for a waiting room, bigger public reservation system, platform resurfacing and a toilet. Similarly, a bigger platform, benches and additional taps will come up at Chandlodia.

On summer special trains, Jena said 260 would be run this year. Special emphasis will be on amenities on trains for which officers will be deputed to oversee the arrangements round-the-clock.

Jena said now the people could lodge complaints through e-mail on adi/brc/wr@ren.nic.in. Although the facility was introduced on February 11, not even one complaint has been made so far.

The 9110 Up/9109 Dn Gujarat Queen runs between Ahmedabad and Balsar. The rakes, costing Rs 5 crore, have been painted Oxford blue and light blue to distinguish them from those of other trains. The lavatories are better designed and stainless steel inlays have been used to check corrosion.

Besides an emergency window, a UIC vestibule has been provided in each rake to ease movement.
