CALCUTTA, MARCH 17: Men's top seed Vijay Kannan pulled out of the National Grasscourt Open tennis championship at the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club here due to ill health. Delhi's Kannan, playing his second round match against Tamil Nadu's Manoj Mahadevan, won the first set 6-3, and was leading 5-2 in the second. Mahadevan fought back to make it 5-5, and then Kannan double faulted to concede the set. In the decider, Mahadevan broke Kannan to go 3-2 up when the top seed decided to retire. Incidentally, Kannan had also skipped the individual singles at the National Games in Imphal due to fitness problems.Another men's seed had to bite the dust today. Veteran Asif Ismail lost to Vasudev Reddy of Andhra Pradesh 4-6 4-6. Although Ismail charged at the net, he was often left stranded by Reddy's passing shots. Marcus Hilpert, the reigning champion and the fourth seed advanced to the quarter-finals with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tamil Nadu's Prem Prakash. Maharashtra's Mustafa Ghouse, who had upset the secondseed Vinod Sridhar yesterday, beat wild card Jagdish Tanwar of Rajasthan 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 to advance into the round of eight.
