CHANDIGARH, March 17: In an exciting encounter Delta Company outplayed Eco Company 13-10, in their last league match to win the top slot in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Inter-Company handball tournament, which concluded at DAV Senior Secondary School in Sector 8, here today.Delta team took the initial lead, which enabled them to win the top honours in the meet. The eventual winners, who had clean slate in their league engagements, however, had to face stiff resistance from Eco Company in the second half of the contest.
Delta players, who were leading 7-3 at the break found the rival defence impregnable in the first quarter of the second session. Had the Eco players sustained their efforts in the last quarter of the match, the outcome would had been different.
The match, however, took an exciting turn when Eco team shook of its lethargy and narrowed the lead 6-7. And in the counter-attack Eco's Satpal made it 7-7 each. Thereafter, attack and counter-attacks followed. The lead changed hands. But in the dying moments of the match, Delta players combined well and increased the tempo of the game, to which their opponents had no answer.
In a swift move Varinder shot two goals for Delta (11-9), and GN Kujur made it 12-9.
Just before the hooter, Varinder again beat the goalkeeper Tapas Ghosh to make it 13-9.
Sambar Mal also scored for Delta. Satpal and Paul Raj were the main scorers for Eco team.
Satnam Singh Gill, Commandant, 127 Battalion, CRPF, was chief guest on the occasion.
