ISLAMABAD, MARCH 21: In another step towards confidence-building and creating a congenial atmosphere for the ongoing bilateral talks, India and Pakistan would be exchanging first batch of civilian prisoners tomorrow after a gap of eight years.The exchange would take place at Wagha border when the Indian authorities would be handed over 15 Indian civilian prisoners, including a woman and three children, and simultaniously New Delhi would release 43 Pakistani civilian prisoners, Pakistani Interior Minister Choudhury Shujaat Hussain said here today.
This wiil be the first ever exchange of civilian prisoners between the two countries since 1991 as agreed upon by the officials from both sides during their talks here earlier this month, he said in a statement.
Both the nations have also agreed to exchange information on arrested nationals of each other, and in order to create a congenial atmosphere between the two countries, following the Lahore declaration, it has been decided to solve the problems ofcivilian prisoners on humanitarian grounds, it said.
Alongwith the civilian prisoners, Pakistani authorities would also release 109 Indian fishermen with their 17 boats and in turn India would release 26 Pakistani fishermen and their three boats, the minister said. The minister also said there are large number of prisoners of both countries presently languishing in jails despite the expiry of their prison terms.
